Four things worth setting before you click.
Any of three across the top or three across the bottom. Bottom centre is the convention for reports; bottom right suits anything that will be bound on the left.

Yes — set the Start from field. This is the usual fix when a cover and a contents page come before the body: start the count at 3 and the printed numbers line up with the document rather than with the PDF page order.
Yes, both. Six positions — three along the top and three along the bottom — plus a choice of Helvetica, Times Roman or Courier, and sizes from 8 to 16 point. Bottom centre at 12 point is the standard for most documents.
This page does it. Acrobat Pro can add page numbers but it is a paid subscription, and the free Adobe Reader cannot — it only reads. Here the page numbers are written permanently into the file for nothing.

They are placed in the page margin, so on a normally laid out document they will not. If your PDF already has something in that corner — an existing footer, a logo, a page number from before — pick a different position so the two do not overlap.
No. Numbers already printed into the page are part of the content and cannot be removed, so adding more would give you two sets. If the document already has numbering you do not want, the clean fix is to re-export it from the original source without them.
