Fair question. Here's the honest version.
Click the upload area or drag your PDF in, pick a compression level and click Compress PDF. The smaller file downloads straight away and you'll see exactly how much was saved. There's no account to create, no watermark on the result and no limit on how many files you compress.
Leave Moderate selected. It typically cuts a PDF by 60 to 70 percent, which brings most documents well under the 25 MB attachment limit used by Gmail and Outlook, and under the 10 MB cap that many web forms and corporate mail servers enforce. If it's still too large, run it again on Extreme.
Light shrinks the file by around 20 percent and leaves quality essentially untouched, which suits documents you're going to print. Moderate is the default and cuts 60 to 70 percent — the right choice for emailing or uploading. Extreme takes off 80 to 90 percent for the times an upload form refuses anything larger, at the cost of some sharpness in photos and scans.
To compress PDF to 1 MB, start with Moderate and check the new size shown after compressing. Most ordinary documents land under 1 MB on that setting. If yours is still above it, run the compressed file through again on Extreme, which will usually get a scanned document down to a few hundred kilobytes.
Open this page in Safari or Chrome and drag your PDF straight in from Finder. It works the same as it does on Windows, with nothing to install and no Preview export settings to work out. macOS has a built-in Quartz filter for this, but it gives you no control over how much is removed and often makes text blurry.
You can compress PDF on iPhone in Safari with nothing to install. Tap the upload area, choose your PDF from Files or iCloud Drive, pick a level and tap Compress PDF. The smaller file saves to your device and can be shared straight from there.
Text stays sharp and selectable at every level because it isn't an image. What gets compressed is the photos and scanned pages inside the document. On Light and Moderate the difference is hard to see on screen. On Extreme a photo-heavy document will look softer, which is the trade for the smallest possible file.
